Not All book Lovers are Nerds. You will not see your typical geeky type crowd at this store. First you would think this was an underground gig spot. What caught my attention first is how the store is designed. You’ll see plenty of artwork, pinoy designs, urban graffiti with a punk rock feel. You can’t see any white pace on the walls because it’s all filled with posters and art. Even with all the chaos, books are instinctively organized and all easily within reach to feel and brows through. For me it was a visual carnival before it was a bookstore.
Do the Ukay-Ukay Book Challenge
Have you ever tried going to an ukay-ukay with hopes of scoring great finds and making fantastic deals? It’s a fun and thrilling experience to rummage through clothes racks and boxes in search for hidden treasures. Pinoy bookworms can now get a piece of the action too. Bookay-ukay is a trendy bookstore in Sikatuna Quezon City which sells vintage, hard-to-find out of print books. You can buy hard-to-fnd literary gems at a “presyong pang-estudyante”. If you love books and want to try something new, you gotta come over.
Good Books, food, music and people make a great Tambayan
The store is a magnet for open minded and smart pinoys who are tired of the sterile aisles of generic bookstores. It’s not about being rich or intellectual – walang lamangan dito. You can have dinner or drinks at Tomato kick restaurant on the same level after your book purchase. Just smile and make new friends in this compound. The area has dozens of other small “kainans” to choose from. There’s also a cute flower shop and salon on the ground floor if you want to relax and get your nails done.
I was able to have a short chat with one of the part owners, Dan, and he explained that sharing wisdom was more important to him than making a buck. The store owners search for books in all the scary places you would not want to go – Quiapo, Recto and the back shelves of Booksale and Books And Mags. Join the family and start reading something older than you are, today.
